Baptism

At Baptism, infants and children up to six years of age are welcomed into the Christian community, marking the beginning of their lifelong journey as committed disciples of Christ. Since infants and small children cannot make this commitment on their own, the parents requesting Baptism for their child declare their intention to pass on the faith they embrace and practice. 

Parents of the child are asked to follow three criteria: 

• A sincere desire to raise the child in the Catholic faith.
• Attend a baptismal preparation class, where there will be a presentation on the history and importance of Baptism and a chance to explore ways to practice Christian Parenting. 
• Selecting an appropriate godparent.

Baptism Preparation Class

Parents wishing to have their infant or child baptized must complete a Baptism preparation class. This class provides an opportunity for parents to reflect on their relationship with Christ and understand the significance of Baptism. It also allows them to have any questions about the sacrament and the ceremony answered.   Godparents must also attend a Baptism preparation class

To sign up for an upcoming parent preparation class, please contact the Parish Office or call (425) 454-9536. This class can be completed at any time before the Baptism, even before the child's birth.

Selection of Godparents

Parents take responsibility for choosing a godparent who will serve as a good example for living the Catholic faith.  Listed below are the criteria for the selection of a godparent: 

• It is customary to have two godparents, however only one is required for Baptism. 
• A godparent may be either male or female. If two godparents are chosen, one must be male and one female. 
• The godparent must be a fully initiated Roman Catholic (baptized, confirmed, and receiving the Eucharist), at least sixteen years of age, and a practicing Catholic. 
• Parents (biological or adoptive) of the person to be baptized may not serve as a godparent. 
• The godparent must provide a letter from their registered parish verifying that they are in good standing with the Catholic faith. We will not need a letter if they are a registered parishioner at Sacred Heart. 
• The godparent must attend a Baptism preparation class.

If your child is seven years or older, who are not Baptized, and have expressed a desire to become Catholic, they are invited to partake in the Order of Christian Initiation of Children (OCIC).  OCIC is designed to prepare children to become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church.

OCIC is a process that prepares Elementary age children for receiving the Sacraments of Initiation:

• Baptism
• Eucharist 
• Confirmation

The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) is the communal process through which non-baptized adults become members of the Catholic Church.  It is also suitable for those who have been baptized in other Christian traditions but feel called to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church, as well as for those individuals baptized in the Catholic Church who have yet to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and confirmation.
 
OCIA is a process that prepares adults for receiving the Sacraments of Initiation:

• Baptism
• Eucharist 
• Confirmation
